Roe v. The Religious Right

by Kidman J. Williams

Roe v. Wade has been in effect for nearly 50 years. Now in a 6 – 3 decision our Right-wing slanted Supreme Court has removed a woman’s choice. Those rights were not taken under consideration and were seemingly imposed by religious beliefs, opinions, and principles; all of which have no business in our governing body.

It was a nice way to kill two birds with one unconstitutional stone.

Roe v. Wade was a huge milestone for women’s rights in 1973. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on January 22 in favor of Jane Roe from Texas. They ruled that a woman’s right to an abortion was protected under the 14th Amendment of the Constitution and the rest of the country had to uphold those rights.

June 24, 2022, those constitutional rights have been revoked.

This is not a vote against what is right or wrong, it isn’t a vote for religious beliefs, or a vote for morality. This was a vote against choice. That choice is supposed to be protected under our freedoms in this country.

Galatians 5:1:  It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”

The Bible (New and Old Testament) has many passages that these overly self-righteous men and Republican doxies can’t ignore, especially since they like to say that The Bible speaks of abortion. NEWS FLASH, it doesn’t.

Some corporations have showed so much support for women’s reproduction rights like Disney. Disney told their employees that they would cover travel cost for those searching for reproductive care. Dick’s Sporting Goods also wrote a letter to their employees offering their support.

Republicans have also been thinking about that very notion. Justice Brett Kavanaugh mentioned possible prosecution of women and their so-called accomplices who travel to neighboring states for the procedure.

“It’s hard to tell at this point, but I think it’s likely that the prosecutors will go after the people that help the woman get the abortion. The person who drives them, the doctor who sees them.”

The Bible that they seem to uphold when it comes to women’s freedom and control, also speaks about such punishments.

Deuteronomy 23:15:  If a slave has taken refuge with you, do not hand them over to their master.”

You may be telling yourself that this has nothing to do with slavery. You would be incorrect. Slavery is a condition compared to that of a slave in respect of exhausting labor or restricted freedom. This is in fact reproductive slavery and an overreach of government involvement.

This decision also comes with a slippery and steep slope. It is a mountain that will probably take another 50 years to climb up, seeing that the women’s rights movement has just been set back decades.

The religious zealots won’t stop here. Not only will women not be able to get the proper care they need, for some states this will also include the morning after pill. This will eventually stop some birth control pills as well. This is not about children or lives. The issue is pure, basic, and simple; it’s control.

Mark my words when I tell you this, to the LGBTQ community… your freedoms will be next.

Remember it was only about 52 years before Roe v. Wade that women were allowed the right to vote. And only a few years before Roe v. Wade, black men and women were still segregated. That shows us just how often our governing body has been on the correct side of history.
