I quit smoking
The way I was smoking
Because smoking wasn’t
About smoking
Any more
It had became a staple
In my everyday schedule
I had to have one now
I had to have one then
Gotta make time
For just one more
Before this
Or after that
They used to be a treat
A pleasure to enjoy
With a cup of coffee
Or a glass of bourbon
Or after a meal
Or after I finish writing
A piece or poem I liked
They were a way
To pass the time
On a long drive
They were a reason
To talk to new people
Huddled outside a bar
They were time alone
When simply standing outside
Doing nothing
Seemed silly
They were fun for a while
Until they weren’t
I quit smoking
The way I was smoking
Because I wasn’t smoking
Anymore
The cigarettes were smoking me
I won’t say that I can’t
Or won’t
Ever smoke a cigarette again
Because they can still be
Just what I need
When I want one
Not when I need one
I like this poem
And it’s finished now
So I think I’ll have one
