Kidman J. Williams – Rupert Murdoch is one of the most irresponsibly evil men in the world. Is that too harsh? National Geographic magazine is one of the most responsible magazines in the world. Would that be accurate? What would happen if those two entities came together? We are about to find out.
The beloved National Geographic has been a nonprofit publication since 1888. The long-running publication will now become quite the for-profit under a $725 million dollar deal that was announced between 21st Century Fox, controlled by nobody’s friends, the family of Rupert Murdoch.
One of the greatest contributions from National Geographic are the grants they give to scientists for research. This could be in grave jeopardy when Fox takes over the company. Murdoch himself is a serious doubter of climate change and Fox is a primary source of misinformation about global warming. Do you see the connection?

Murdoch is not a friend to the people of this world. He is always thinking of ways to carry out his own agendas. He makes that clear in everything he does.
Will this mean the end of science grants, well not according to this quote from president-CEO of The Society:
“The value generated by this transaction, including the consistent and attractive revenue stream that National Geographic Partners will deliver, ensures that we will have greater resources for this work, which includes our grant making programs that support scientists and explorers around the world. As media organizations work to meet the increasing demand for high quality storytelling across multiple platforms, it’s clear that the opportunity to grow by more closely aligning our branded content and licensing assets is the right path. We now will have the scale and reach to continue to fulfill our mission long into the future. The Society’s work will be the engine that feeds our content creation efforts, enabling us to share that work with even larger audiences and achieve more impact. It’s a virtuous cycle.”
I’m not quite sure if virtuous would be a word that I would personally use when describing anything to do with Fox and Murdoch.
Here are the simple facts. Murdoch is now a major controller in a $1 billion dollar organization. his threat to honest journalism and accurate information now has even more power over science grants in the United States. I’m not even including the many other outlets that are already owned by News Corp.
We might be seeing the new National Geographic magazine and all their assets turned into an evil machine bent on publishing stories that will ensure Murdoch and all his friends, partners, and political cronies more of an edge in the world, despite whether people know they are full of shit or not.
What is the benefit to this…a few more measly dollars in their pockets? For me this is truly a sad day for journalism and science.
