An 11-year-old girl, raped by her mother’s boyfriend, gave birth by cesarean section on Thursday at a Red Cross hospital in Paraguay after being denied an abortion by doctors and judicial officials,
“A baby girl, weighing 3.5 kilos, was born without any complications or anomalies,” said Dr. Mario Villalba, director of the Red Cross hospital. “The post-operative recovery is going very well.”
While Paraguayan law permits abortion if a mother’s life is endangered. medical doctors, psychologists and judicial officials determined the girl’s life was not at risk. An abortion was argued for by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, saying the girl was four times more likely to die in childbirth than an adult.
In Paraguay, every day an average of two girls between the ages of 10 and 14 give birth.
