“The Bristol Bar and Grille is a great place for the Hunter S. Thompson banner! after the HST event in 96, I was at a late dinner with Hunter and some other folks at that very Bristol (he convinced them to seat a group of us altho it was long after closing time). At one point in the evening he stabbed a steak knife into the table to get the reporters to go away.” Annie McClanahan
Annie read her poetry at the Official Hunter S. Thompson Tribute I produced
December 12, 1996. Hunter and I were standing at the edge of the stage as she read. Hunter said “If that’s the voice of our next generation we have nothing to worry about.” Hunter loved Annie’s work.

p.s. The dinner Annie mentions included Hunter, his son Juan, Johnny Depp, Warren Zevon, David Amram, Douglas Brinkley, Mark Reese, Pee Wee’s son, myself, and others. My friend Pete, the Bristol GM, moved tables together for us. We sat up front next to the big window.
The Bristol Bar and Grille is on Bardstown Road, in the heart of The Highlands, where Hunter grew up. It’s the permanent home for the giant Hunter S. Thompson banner. The art for the banner was created by Ralph Steadman.
