A demonstration led by the New Black Panther Party, some of them armed, marched Wednesday afternoon outside the Waller County jail in Hempstead, Texas, in protest of the arrest and subsequent death of Sandra Bland last month.
Bland, a 28-year-old Chicago-area woman, arrested during a routine traffic stop for extremely negligible reasons, was found dead in her jail cell July 13, three days later in what police say and a medical examiner determined was suicide.
A riot response team of mounted Harris County sheriff’s deputies from Houston monitored the demonstration without incident or arrest.
Bland’s family has filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against officials, including the trooper who stopped Bland for not signaling a lane change.
