On Thursday, the Republican-controlled Senate voted 52-47 to repeal Obamacare and defund Planned Parenthood. This amounts to little more than an attempted war on the poor amidst great bids for re-election. Republicans are also sending a message to voters that if their party reigns during next year’s Presidential election, Obamacare will disappear and Planned Parenthood funding will be axed. But relax, nothing’s going to happen here. Obama will veto that shit immediately. Obviously. It’s a dog and pony show to sate the Republican constituents.
Not every Republican was for both items in the bill, if that matters.
“The Republican caucus is united in its belief that Obamacare is flawed and needs to be fixed,” said moderate Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine). “By twinning it with a defunding of Planned Parenthood, you divide the caucus and muddy the message in my view.”
Collins, however, was one of only two Republicans who didn’t vote for the bill. Two! So if we can take anything from this news, it’s maybe to understand how absolutely great Planned Parenthood is, and to remember in what high regard we hold our health, and how it contributes to our quality of life. Because Republicans seem to think we just don’t need that part – good health, I mean. Of course if they have some better plan, this reporter would like to hear about it. But no alternatives have been seriously mentioned, so it would appear the Republicans plan is to trim the fat and “decrease the surplus population”. They’d like to get elected, not make great changes for the people. I’m no Democrat, but at least under this current nationalistic war-monger, we can go to the doctor and anyone can get legally married. It’s something, anyway.
Healthcare, which is at the heart of both Obamacare and Planned Parenthood, was something millions of people lacked in the United States. 12 million humans have now obtained medical insurance under the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”) while 2.7 million women visit Planned Parenthood centers annually. There, they receive services ranging from sex education to annual visits, exams, pregnancy care, abortions and screenings for breast cancer and STDs. Planned Parenthood is often the only source of healthcare for millions of women and lives are saved because of the services they perform, often on a free or sliding-scale basis. Planned Parenthood clinics are also generally cleaner, more ably staffed and far more positive towards women than traditional free medical clinics.
In times of heavy, often confusing election rhetoric I will urge readers to get out there, Gonzo style, and either take control of your own health as much as possible through exercise, good food, meditation and medicinal herbs, whiskey and hallucinogens, and then dance, snarl and laugh your way out of the mainstream media circus and into revolution. Punch a wall or hug a tree, either way you’ll feel some inner joy.
