Writer Sammie Mays is the honorary mayor of Key West, a Kentucky Colonel, and the journalist who infiltrated the prison system posing as a country singer to snap an exclusive photograph of jailed baseball player Pete Rose for The National Enquirer, earning herself the nickname “Gonzo.” She is the author of “Damn the Carnations: Full Speed Ahead” which recounts that and other experiences from her colorful and spirited life. In the above BBC audio clip, she describes her encounter with Bill Cosby.
“Sammie Mays is a Category 5 literary hurricane. Here’s a full-force gale of stories about the adventures that earned her the nickname ‘The Gonz’ and a place as the honorary mayor of Key West. ‘Damn the Carnations’ has the added attraction of making you reconsider your approach to toilet flushing. The book is full of piss, vinegar, wisdom and advice for living the good life.” –WILLIAM McKEEN, Professor & Chair, Boston University, Dept. of Journalism and author of Outlaw Journalist.
